Chandigarh, October 14
The Punjab government has decided to convene a special session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Monday October 19 to enact legislation to counter the central government’s “dangerous against farmers” agricultural laws.
A decision to this effect was made at a Punjab Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh here on Wednesday via video conference.
The Chief Minister had previously announced that his government will fight tooth and nail against “anti-federal and vicious” farm laws through legislative, legal and other avenues. A few days ago he had said that he would call a special session of the Assembly to introduce the necessary amendments to state laws to deny the dangerous impact of central laws, which are designed to ruin farmers, as well as agriculture and the state economy. . .
With the cabinet decision, the Governor of Punjab was authorized to convene the thirteenth (special) session of the fifteenth Punjab Vidhan Sabha, according to clause (1) of article 174 of the Constitution of India.
It should be recalled that the twelfth session of the 15th Punjab Vidhan Sabha concluded on August 28, 2020 in which a resolution was passed by majority to reject the contentious agricultural ordinances, viz. The Agricultural and Agricultural Products Trade (Promotion and Facilitation) Ordinance, 2020; The Farmers Agreement (Empowerment and Protection) on Price Guarantee and Agricultural Services Ordinance, 2020; and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Ordinance 2020, in addition to the Electricity Bill (Amendment) 2020, promulgated by the Union government.
