Various parts of Mumbai are flooded due to heavy night rains. This has led to traffic problems and a disruption to public transport. The Central Railways stopped local services between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Thane on the main line, and CSMT to Vasi in the port section. Two long-distance trains (02110, 02109) were canceled and three were rescheduled (05645, 01301, 02534). Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus service has also been affected due to flooded streets.
Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal appealed to people to stay inside. He also called for non-essential businesses to remain closed due to IMD’s forecast of “heavy to very heavy rains” in the city.
According to the IMD, the rainfall received in the 24 hours that ended at 8.30am on Wednesday was recorded at 286.4 mm in Santacruz, 147.8 mm in Colaba, 119.8 mm in Thane, 39.5 mm in Ratnagiri and 42.1mm in Dhanu. The meteorological department said heavy to very heavy rains will continue in the city until around noon.
According to BMC’s automatic weather stations, from 8 a.m. on September 22 to 8 a.m. on September 23, Mumbai recorded 267.67 mm of rain. The western suburbs received 251.48 mm, while the eastern suburbs received 173.22 mm of rain.
