Bombay:
There is still no respite from Covid-19 for Pune, as the city had extended its nightly curfew until March 14. Schools, universities, training classes and other educational institutions in the city will also remain closed, until then, the city’s mayor has said. The city has reported up to 1,000 new cases a day since February 24.
The movement of the public in the city will not be allowed between 11 pm and 6 am, except for essential services.
“In recent days, the city of Pune has seen an increase in the number of coronavirus cases. The rules imposed until February 28 in this context have been extended until March 14,” the mayor of Pune said today, Murlidhar Mohol.
Pune had reopened its educational institutes in January after months of online classes. The municipal corporation had asked teachers and school personnel to undergo RT-PCR testing before re-entering. Stores in rural Pune reopened in November.
However, authorities had to restore the curbs after a spike. Meanwhile, the entire state of Maharashtra has witnessed a jump in the spread of Covid-19. The Vidarbha region, especially the Akola, Amravati, Yavatmal, Buldana, Wardha and Nagpur districts, has experienced the biggest leap.
Government data released today shows the total number of cases in Pune at 4,06,453 and recoveries at 3,887,527. Active cases in Pune as of Saturday were 9,860, while the death toll is 9,235.
Maharashtra remains the state most affected by the pandemic in India. Today 8,623 new cases were reported along with 51 deaths related to Covid-19. So far, 52,092 people have died from the disease since the outbreak reached the state. In total, it has registered 21,46,777 cases, of which 73,734 remain active now.
