Pune hospitals have started reporting fewer cases of new Covid-19 infections. An analysis until October 11, carried out by the health department of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), shows a definite relief of the burden on health facilities.

As on Monday, of the total of 15,417 beds reserved for Covid-19 patients by PMC in public and private hospitals, as well as in Covid care centers, only 6,651 were occupied and 8,766 vacant.

The 1,902 empty beds in the hospitals dedicated to Covid included 193 normal beds without oxygen, 1,440 beds with oxygen, 174 ICU beds without ventilators and 95 ICU beds with ventilators. The maximum number of beds was empty in the Covid care centers established throughout the city. Of the 7,911 beds, only 1,047 were occupied while 6,864 were vacant, and the PMC kept many centers temporarily closed.

Despite a slight increase in the death rate due to viral infection, the recovery rate of Covid-19 patients in PMC areas is set to cross the 90 percent mark. The city still has 12,898 active cases, while 6,055 are in home isolation. There are 858 critically ill patients in ICUs in all hospitals. In the city of Pune, a total of 3,830 deaths have been recorded.

At several hospitals, doctors said the number of new admissions of Covid-19 patients has been reduced.

Dr Dhananjay Kelkar, medical director at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital, said there was a clear downward trend in the number of Covid-19 infections. “Previously, we had four to five critically ill patients waiting in our hospital to get a bed in the ICU. This is not the case. Like all epidemics, this one too has followed the standard bell curve and we are now seeing a reduction in the peak number of cases, ”said Dr. Kelkar.

“Previously, almost 50 new patients were admitted daily. Now the burden has been reduced to between 15 and 20 new admissions, ”said Dr. Sanjay Lalwani, medical director of Bharati Hospital.

Dr. Sanjay Pathare, medical director of Ruby Hall Clinic, said there has been a 30 percent drop in new Covid-19 patients, but critical care patients continue to enter. “We receive requests for the treatment of critical cases and also, non-Covid emergencies are being looked at in a broader way,” said Dr. Pathare.

According to Dr. Sunil Rao, medical director of the Sahyadri Hospitals group, there has been a drop in the number of patients in the Covid wards, and now it is necessary for local residents to remain vigilant to maintain physical distance and make sure to use masks when preventive measures.

Meanwhile, from September 15 to October 10, a total of 32.05 lakh residents were screened as part of the state government’s “My family, my responsibility” campaign. A total of 1.78 lakh residents with comorbid conditions were identified. According to health data from PMC, 1,348 residents tested positive for Covid-19 after home screening visits.

Additionally, a ward analysis shows that the Hadapsar ward had reported the highest number of Covid-19 cases (15,146) followed by the Dhankawadi ward (14,680) and the Sinhagad Road ward (11,824).
