The decision was announced after a meeting with CM BS Yediyurappa.
The Karnataka government decided on Monday that PU schools and universities will not reopen in the state in December. Karnataka Chief Minister Bs Yediyurappa met on Monday with Minister of Primary and Secondary Education B Suresh Kumar, the Department of Health, Rural Development and the Department of Panchayat Raj and member of the Technical Advisory Committee for COVID-19, on the reopening of schools.
The committee, in its report to the Chief Minister, said that it is not advisable for schools to reopen in December. “As December is the time of winter, more respiratory infections are likely to occur. Furthermore, experts told us that this is the time when Karnataka is likely to witness a second wave of infections. That is why we decided not to reopen schools anytime soon, ”said Minister of Primary and Secondary Education B Suresh Kumar.
In the third week of December another meeting will be held with the Chief Minister, where a decision will be made. “The Department of Health has suggested that we wait until December to see what the situation is like. We are giving importance to life. Class 10 students are understandably concerned about board exams, but life is more important and we have always prioritized this, ”said Suresh Kumar.
Furthermore, he stated that in addition to high school students, students between classes 4 and 7 will also now have prerecorded lessons, which will be broadcast on the DD Chandana channel. The videos will also be uploaded to YouTube. The project is called Makkalavani.
Minister Suresh Kumar further stated that Department of Education officials had informed the Chief Minister that many children, especially between the ages of 13 and 18, were dropping out of school and the PUC to seek work and provide for their families. This was also discussed. The Health Department said that it is best to decide in the third week of December, ”added Suresh Kumar.
He said that so far, classes were being held at DD Chandana for SSLC students and that the curriculum would be completed in January.
