Congressional leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra holds hands and participates in a traditional ‘Jhumur’ dance with young teenagers from Assam’s Lakhimpur tea tribes, shows a video shared by the party on Twitter.

Surrounded by a large crowd, including the media and security personnel, Ms. Gandhi, 49, danced to the dhol beats and a cappella singing of the young women. She was not wearing a face mask and neither did the girls dance with her.

Dressed in a purple sari and traditional state scarf, Ms. Gandhi was all smiles as she danced in the minute-long video. She was surrounded by a group of young girls, all dressed in red and white saris.

Ms. Gandhi is in Assam on a two-day visit to launch the Congressional campaign for the three-phase assembly elections in the state that begins on March 27.

His first stop was Guwahati, where he offered prayers at the iconic Kamakhya Temple, the images of which were shared on Twitter.

He then left for Lakhimpur, 370 km away, where he participated in local customs and traditions, including the ‘Jhumur’ dance.

At the airport, she was greeted with a traditional Bihu dance performance.

Ms Gandhi also launched a statewide unemployment protest from Lakhimpur today, Congress tweeted.

The secretary general of Congress has been visiting various cities and interacting with locals and participating in customs, the most recent of which was when she received a rowing lesson with a boatman in Uttar Pradesh.

His brother Rahul Gandhi is also in another state linked to the polls: Tamil Nadu, where he is on a three-day campaign.
