New Delhi:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants to prevent Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal from developing the national capital, so he got the bill that gives the Lieutenant Governor more power passed in parliament, Senior Vice Minister Manish has alleged Sisodia.
“Everyone talks about the Modi (development) model. People talk about how the Modi model is failing and that Arvind Kejriwal can be an alternative … Kejriwal doesn’t do tokenism. So they have lost sleep over that,”, Said Mr. Sisodia at a press conference.
“Prime Minister Modi is doing things to stop the development of Delhi, India. He is the Prime Minister of India, he can do a good job anywhere, but he won’t.”
The Delhi National Capital Territory Government (Amendment) bill makes it clear that the term “government” in Delhi means the Lieutenant Governor and his opinion must be taken before the Delhi government takes any executive action.
The controversial bill that the Arvind Kejriwal-led party has been protesting against was passed in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. The opposition protested the legislation, and parliamentarians from parties such as the BJD, the Samajwadi Party, the Congress and the YSR Congress went on strike.
“They want to put obstacles to what Kejriwal has been doing. But Kejriwal is a fighter … he will not stop because of obstacles,” Sisodia said.
“The position of the prime minister is like a father to the nation. The prime minister should facilitate the work of any politician or party. But instead he is doing a negative policy … they want to stop schools, hospitals, clinics … scared of Kejriwal’s popularity, “he added.
The opposition called the bill “unconstitutional” and demanded that it be sent to a Select Committee for scrutiny. The bill was first passed in Rajya Sabha by voice vote. However, following the opposition’s demand for a division, it was approved again in the upper house, with 83 members voting in favor, while 45 voted against.
After the bill was passed, Kejriwal, who has had problems with the lieutenant governor’s office since he first took office as prime minister on power-sharing, had said it was a “sad day for Indian democracy.”
“RS passes the GNCTD amendment bill. Sad day for Indian democracy. We will continue our fight to restore power to the people. Whatever the obstacles, we will continue to do good work. The work will not stop or slow down.” he tweeted.
