Kutch (Gujarat):
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his support once again for his government’s controversial agricultural sector laws that have had farmers camping on the borders of Delhi for almost a month.
“The agricultural reforms that have been carried out are exactly what farmers’ bodies and even opposition parties have been calling for over the years,” the prime minister said, reiterating the government’s claim that the opposition now “instigates” and “deceives” farmers.
“The Government of India is always committed to the welfare of farmers and we will continue to provide for farmers and address their concerns,” he added while speaking at a function in Gujarat’s Kutch.
Last week, the BJP had claimed that Congress contradicted its own plans to incite farmers and oppose the government.
During the UPA rule, Congress and Sharad Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party supported what are now key provisions of the farm laws.
