First main guest at centennial celebrations, Muslim University of Aligarh warns on politics

PM Modi will attend the Muslim University of Aligarh centennial celebration on December 22.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the Muslim University of Aligarh’s centennial celebration on December 22. He will be the main guest and attend the program virtually with the Union’s Education Minister Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, the university said.

The university’s press release also added that the rector, Professor Tariq Mansoor, has “appealed to all interested parties to keep the Centennial Program above politics.”

The first university has had a thorny relationship with the BJP, whose leaders have repeatedly criticized the university students and have even suggested that the name of the institution be changed.

During protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act, students at Aligarh Muslim University, along with their counterparts at Delhi’s Jamia Milia Islamia, have been subjected to police excesses, which made headlines.

Campus students across the country demonstrated in support of Jamia and AMU students after the violent clashes on December 15, 2019.

Two years ago, a portrait of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, hanging in the university’s student residence, had become the subject of much controversy, sparked by a letter from the local MLA.

Satish Gautam, the Aligarh BJP legislator, had written to the vice chancellor, asking him why the portrait was allowed. AMU spokesperson Shafey Kidwai had responded that Jinnah was one of the founders of the university and was granted life membership in the student union.
