New Delhi:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered prayers on Saturday at the centennial Jeshoreshwari Kali Temple in the Shatkhira district of Bangladesh on the second day of his visit to the nation.
The temple, located in a town called Ishwaripur on the Indian border, is a popular destination for devotees from both sides of the border.
PM Modi received a traditional welcome at the temple, where he was seen sitting on the ground and offering prayers. He also placed a “handmade Mukut (crown)” on the Goddess, which is made of gold-plated silver and crafted for three weeks by a traditional craftsman, according to the Foreign Ministry.

“I was fortunate to visit this sacred shrine and offer my prayers to Ma Kali. I pray to Mother that the world is freed from the Covid pandemic as soon as possible,” he said after the visit.
According to him, India had asked the Bangladeshi government to be allowed to build a community hall in the temple complex. “This community hall will have a multiple purpose: as a resting place for devotees and as a place of refuge and help during calamities and natural disasters, especially cyclones. It will be for the service of the people,” he said.
According to Hindu mythology, the Jeshoreshwari Kali Temple is one of 51 Shakti Peeths, scattered throughout India and neighboring countries. Records suggest that a Hindu king installed the temple in the 16th century.
On Thursday, the day before leaving for Bangladesh, Prime Minister Modi had said that he hoped to offer prayers to the goddess Kali at the Jeshoreshwari Kali temple.
The temple was fixed before the visit.
When the prime minister last visited Bangladesh in 2015, he had offered prayers at the Dhakeshwari temple in Dhaka.
