Sasaram:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing his first rally in Bihar today for the elections that will begin next week, referred to criticism of his government’s move to end special status for Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 and targeted the opposition.
“Everybody was waiting for Article 370 to be repealed, but these people say they will reverse the decision once they are elected to power,” Prime Minister Modi said in Sasaram, in a joint rally with Bihar’s chief minister, Nitish Kumar.
“The NDA government repealed Article 370. These people say they will bring it back if they come to power. After making such statements, do you dare to ask Bihar for votes? Isn’t this an insult to Bihar? The state who sends his sons and daughters to the borders to protect the country? “
Nitish Kumar, significantly, initially opposed the Article 370 measure and his MPs from Janata Dal United had even opposed the central government’s decision in both houses of parliament last year. Nitish Kumar’s move as an ally of the BJP had surprised many even though it was related to his stated ideological position on Article 370.
Within days, however, Nitish Kumar and his group found out and accepted the center’s decision. JDU leaders said it had opposed the measure because it had not been consulted, but since it had become law, the party would support it. “The special status of Kashmir has ended and Article 370 has been left behind,” JDU leader RCP Singh said in August last year.
In the campaign for Bihar, Article 370 has appeared more than once.
Earlier this week, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, one of the BJP activists in Bihar, said that the repeal of Article 370 had given people from other states the opportunity to own property in Jammu and Kashmir. He said this at the rallies in Jamui, Tarari and Paliganj.
“Previously, a person from this part of Bihar could not even think of owning property in Kashmir. Congress had put such a system in place. But Narendra Modi and Amit Shah changed all that. Article 370 has been removed and people can now buy and own property anywhere in Kashmir, “he said.
