Prime Minister Narendra Modi Addresses Muslim University Aligarh Centennial Celebrations: Key Points | India News

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Centennial celebrations of Muslim University of Aligarh (AMU) via videoconference.
This is the first time that PM Modi will participate in a program at the Muslim University of Aligarh. PM Modi also released a postage stamp during the event. UMA Chancellor Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin and Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank attended the event.
At the beginning of the week, the buildings of the Muslim University of Aligarh (AMU) were illuminated for the centennial celebrations.

Here are the main quotes from PM Modi’s address:
1

‘AMU represents the rich culture and heritage of India’

  • AMU alumni are spread across the world and take pride in their alma mater. Your pride is justified. In 100 years of existence, AMU has created and polished millions of lives, giving them scientific and modern thinking and inspiring them to do something for society and the nation.
  • Over the past 100 years, AMU has also worked to strengthen India’s relations with many countries around the world.
  • Research conducted at AMU on Urdu, Arabic and Persian languages, research on Islamic literature, gives new energy to the cultural relations of India with the entire Islamic world.
  • People tell me that the AMU campus is like a city unto itself. We see a mini India between different departments, dozens of hostels, thousands of teachers and professors. The diversity we see here is not only the strength of this university but also of the entire nation.
  • I have been told that at least 1,000 international students are currently enrolled at AMU.
  • AMU students have a responsibility to share all that is good about India with the world. They have a dual responsibility to contribute to the building of the nation and also to help India strengthen its soft power.
2

‘AMU’s contribution to the fight against the unprecedented coronavirus’

  • The contributions made by the university during the coronavirus pandemic were unprecedented.
  • They helped people get tested for free, built isolation rooms, started plasma banks, provided hospital beds, and helped society.
3

‘Government policies are implemented without discrimination’

  • AMU founder Sir Syed had said that the growth of the country is above the caste and religion of the people.
  • He also gave an example and said that for the body to stay healthy, all parts of the body must be healthy.
  • Sir Syed has also said that religion should not be the reason for anyone’s backwardness.
  • India is on the path where no citizen would be left behind because of their religion and everyone would have the same opportunities for everyone to fulfill their dreams. Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas is the mantra behind him.
  • I recently met an AMU alumnus who is also an academic and told him that we did free toilets and that there was no discrimination in their construction. All communities benefited from these free toilets.
  • The policies made by the government reach all sectors regardless of their religion. Bank accounts of more than 40 million million poor have been opened without any discrimination. Without discrimination, more than 2 million poor were provided pucca houses. More than 8 million women received gas connections without discrimination.
  • 50 crore people received free treatment of up to Rs 5 lakh under the Ayushman scheme without any discrimination.
  • What belongs to the country belongs to every compatriot and every citizen should be benefited, our government is working in this spirit.

‘The dropout rate of Muslim girls dropped dramatically’

  • Previously, the dropout rate for Muslim girls was 70 percent due to the lack of toilets and now, after the launch of the Swachh Bharat Mission, the dropout rate has dropped to just 30 percent.
  • Also at AMU, a bridging course has been started for students who had to drop out.
  • Thirty-five percent of the students at AMU today are female, I congratulate AMU for this feat.
  • The neglect of the triple talaq is over.
5

‘Don’t look at everything from a political lens’

  • Politics is part of society, but there are more important things in life. Politics cannot be one size fits all.
  • I urge people not to look at everything from a political perspective. Campuses like AMU can play a key role in contributing to this approach.
  • There are people who spread all kinds of negativity. But if we put them aside, we can grow.
  • The poor cannot wait, the uneducated cannot wait for politics. Development cannot wait for politics.
  • Much time has already been lost in differences. Let us join together to work for an Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

About AMU
The AMU became a University in 1920, through an Act of the Legislative Council of India that elevated the Anglo-Oriental Mohammedan College (MAO) to the status of Central University. MAO College was created in 1877 by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, according to the PMO statement.
