On May 12, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation once again as India headed into the fourth phase of blocking and easing restrictions despite an increase in COVID-19 cases.
The speech, which started at 8pm and continued until 8.30pm, was highly anticipated by citizens across the country.
In his speech, the Prime Minister announced an aid package of Rs 20 lakh crore under “Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan”, with the aim of helping the country to become self-sufficient and get back on track after the coronavirus crisis.
However, many on Twitter objected to the fact that the entire speech was in Hindi. And extremely tough and detailed Hindi, by the way.
In the course of the speech, the Prime Minister used several Hindi words that are not only dark and used sparingly, but are also difficult to pronounce even for Hindi speakers.
Within minutes of the speech, Google was inundated with searches for Hindi words like “atmanirbhar” (self-sufficient) and others that break the jaw.
Twitter was awash with jokes and memes with confused Indians turning to humor to voice their problems. Many netizens who don’t speak Hindi claimed they didn’t understand a word of the speech, while others called it a Hindi lesson.
