Prime Minister Narendra Modi took his first injection of the coronavirus vaccine this morning at the AIIMS in Delhi as India expands the vaccination campaign to people over 60 and people over 45 who have illnesses.

“It is remarkable how our doctors and scientists have worked in a short time to strengthen the global fight against COVID-19,” tweeted Prime Minister Modi while sharing a picture of himself taking the first dose of the vaccine.

PM Modi also appealed to all those who are eligible to receive the vaccine.

“Together, let’s make India COVID-19 free,” he said.

PM Modi was given homegrown Covaxin, developed by Bharat Biotech and the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR).

In addition to Covaxin, Covishield from the Pune-based Serum Institute, developed in partnership with the University of Oxford and pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca, is being used in the vaccination campaign that began on January 16.

More vaccines are likely to be approved for use in the coming months, including Russia’s Sputnik-V and Cadila Healthcare’s ZyCov-D.

India will today expand its coronavirus vaccination program to cover people over 60 and people over 45 who have illnesses, as it hopes to curb a growing number of more infectious virus strains and an outbreak of cases in some states. .

Registration is scheduled to open at 9 am on www.cowin.gov.in and the Aarogya Setu app and there will also be walk-in vaccinations at select locations. India began its vaccination campaign on January 16 with the intention of inoculating three front-line workers with crore, but has struggled with hesitancy, giving 1.43 crore injections so far.

The government hopes to vaccinate 30 million people by August in this second phase.

India has reported the second highest number of cases after the United States at 1.1 million rupees. Cases have skyrocketed in recent days in states such as Maharashtra, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Punjab.
