Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII) on Saturday, which has partnered with global pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford for the COVID-19 vaccine, a senior official said Thursday.
The Central Medicines Standards Control Organization has granted permission to manufacture COVID-19 vaccine for preclinical testing, examination and analysis to seven companies, two of which are the Serum Institute of India (SII) and Gennova Biopharmaceuticals.
“We have received a confirmation on Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the Serum Institute of India on Saturday,” said Pune Division Commissioner Saurabh Rao.
The prime minister will arrive at Pune airport at 12:30 pm on Saturday. He will attend the program scheduled at the Serum Institute of India from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., where he will review the production and distribution mechanism of the COVID-19 vaccine. ” he said.
Before the Prime Minister’s visit, a team from the Special Protection Group (SPG) arrived in the city for security arrangements and local machinery, including police, firefighters, revenue departments, people with disabilities and the health, they are coordinating.
On Tuesday, Rao said there is the possibility of the prime minister’s visit to Pune, and if that happens, it would be aimed at reviewing the status of the candidate vaccine for coronavirus infection and learning about its launch, production and distribution mechanisms.
Rao had also reported that ambassadors and envoys from 100 countries will visit the Serum Institute of India and Gennova Biopharmaceuticals Ltd here on December 4.
