Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Atal Tunnel in Rohtang, at a height of 10,000 feet, the world’s longest traffic tunnel, in Himachal Pradesh on October 3 at 10 a.m., the Prime Minister’s Office said on Thursday.
According to the reception plan, approved by the cabinet, PM Modi will receive a great welcome on arrival at four points according to the traditions of the districts. The prime minister, who will return to New Delhi on the same day, will be accompanied by the Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and the Union Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur.
Prime Minister Modi will address two public meetings in Himachal Pradesh after opening the strategic Atal Tunnel Rohtang, Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur said on Sept. 28, stating that all Covid-19 protocols will be followed during the function, according to the PTI news agency.
Named after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the 9.2 km long tunnel is the longest road tunnel in the world, connecting Manali with the Lahaul-Spiti Valley year-round. Previously, the valley was isolated for about 6 months of the year due to heavy snowfall.
The tunnel is built to ultra-modern specifications in the Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas at an altitude of 3000 mtrs (10,000 feet) from mean sea level (MSL). It reduces the distance by road by 46 Kms between Manali and Leh and the time by approximately 4 to 5 hours.
The Atal tunnel has been designed for a traffic density of 3,000 cars per day and 1,500 trucks per day with a maximum speed of 80 km / h. It has the latest generation electromechanical system that includes a semi-transversal ventilation system, a fire control system, lighting and SCADA monitoring.
