New Delhi:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold an all-party meeting on Friday morning to discuss the coronavirus situation in the country, the sources said. This is the second all-party meeting convened by the government on the coronavirus, which has affected more than 94 lakh people across India, since the start of the pandemic.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Interior Minister Amit Shah, Health Minister Harsh Vardhan and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi are likely to attend the meeting, the sources said, adding that the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs has been approached the leaders of all parties.

While India has recorded the second highest number of cases in the world after the United States, it is one of the countries with the lowest deaths per million inhabitants globally, the Health Ministry said this morning.

More than 88 lakh of Covid patients have recovered and nearly 1.3 lakh of Covid-related deaths have been recorded since the first case was reported in Kerala on January 30.

In the midst of a worldwide race to find a Covid vaccine, the prime minister visited the county’s major vaccine centers on Saturday to personally review the coronavirus vaccine development and manufacturing process.

The visit, Prime Minister Modi’s office said, was meant to help him get a “first-hand perspective of the preparations, the challenges and the roadmap in India’s effort to vaccinate its citizens.”

Today he held a virtual meeting with three teams that develop COVID-19 vaccines and sought suggestions and ideas on regulatory processes. He urged teams to “go the extra mile to use plain language to inform the general public about the vaccine.”

This is the fourth major meeting that PM Modi has chaired in the past 10 days to review efforts in India to develop a vaccine for the deadly virus.
