Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi died Monday night after multiple organ failures as a result of post-Covid complications. He was 86 years old.
The loss of the veteran leader of Congress, a six-time MP who charted a new and prosperous course for his home state during his three consecutive terms in office, was met with pain and sadness across political lines and across the country.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the way by offering his condolences, calling himself “haunted” by the news and describing Gogoi as “a popular leader and a veteran administrator.”

President Ram Nath Kovind also tweeted, mourning the loss of “a veteran leader with rich political and administrative experience.”

Rahul Gandhi and Shashi Tharoor were also among those who expressed their regret. Gandhi praised Tarun Gogoi as a “true leader of Congress who dedicated his life to the people of Assam.”

BJP leader Jyotiraditya Scindia, who jumped out of Congress earlier this year, said Gogoi had worked hard for Assam’s development and progress.
“My condolences on the sad passing of Shri Tarun Gogoi, who was the Chief Minister of Assam for 15 years, working for the development and progress of the state. I pray to God that he comforts the soul of the deceased and gives to the family grieving the power to endure this trauma, “Scindia said.
Gogoi, who was admitted to the hospital with coronavirus on August 25, was discharged last month. However, days later, he was readmitted and placed on respiratory assistance after multiple organ failure.
He is survived by his wife Dolly Gogoi, daughter Chandrima Gogoi, and son Gaurav Gogoi, who is the Lok Sabha congressional deputy from the Kaliabor seat in Assam.
