New Delhi:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a special keynote address at the United States-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) 3rd Annual Leadership Summit today, said a global pandemic has impacted everyone. “It is testing our resilience, our public health system and our economic system. The current situation calls for a new mindset in which the approach to development is human-centered,” the prime minister said.
The summit speech was delivered via videoconference.
The US-India Strategic Partnership Forum is a non-profit organization working for the US-India partnership.
The theme of the five-day summit that began on August 31 is “America and India navigating new challenges.”
Here are the highlights of PM Modi’s direction:
- The pandemic has affected several things, but it has not affected the aspirations and ambitions of 1.3 billion Indians. In recent months, far-reaching reforms have been carried out. This makes business easier and red tape less.
- India, a country with 1.3 billion people and limited resources, has one of the lowest death rates per million in the world. The recovery rate is also constantly increasing. We are the second largest PPE equipment manufacturers in the world.
- We have battled floods, two cyclones, locust attacks in addition to COVID-19. This made the people stronger. Through Covid and the closure, the Center knew one thing: the poor must be protected. The government is supporting 800 million Indians during the time of the pandemic.
- When 2020 started, did anyone imagine how it would play out? A global pandemic has impacted everyone. It is testing our resilience, our public health system, and our economic system. The current situation requires a new mindset in which the development approach is human-centered.
- The Indians have embarked on a mission to make a ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat‘(Self-sufficient India). ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat‘fuses the local with the global. It ensures that India’s strengths act as a global force multiplier. Despite local needs, India did not shy away from global responsibilities and ensured the constant supply of medicines to the world.
- For the challenges in India, you have a government that believes in delivering results, for which ease of living is just as important as ease of doing business. You are facing a young country with a 65% population under 35 years of age.
- India offers a transparent and predictable tax regime. Our system encourages and supports honest taxpayers.
- The road ahead is full of opportunities. These opportunities are found in the public and private sectors. They cover the basic economic sectors as well as the social sectors.
- As we look at the way forward, we must maintain our focus on increasing our capabilities, protecting the poor, and preparing our citizens for the future.
- This pandemic has also shown the world that the decision to develop global supply chains must be based not only on costs. They must also be based on trust. Along with the affordability of geography, companies are now also looking for reliability and policy stability.
