The video below allegedly shows someone handling the new iPhone 12, fresh out of its retail package. But how can we be sure that this isn’t just the iPhone 11 Pro? And we don’t refer to this as an indictment of Apple’s slow pace when it comes to its smartphone designs.
The first thing that stands out is the flat sides; The 2020 generation of Apple phones is rumored to follow the lead of the iPad Pros, which have the sides squared. The iPhone 11 generation has rounded sides. But rumors also claim that the notch will be smaller and we are not seeing it. To be fair, it didn’t look any smaller in this supposed iPhone 12 photo either.
The camera layout on the back is identical to the iPhone 11 Pro, which doesn’t match some of the renders we’ve seen. However, renders can be inaccurate if based on case manufacturer schematics; the housing does not cover the camera, so the drawings do not present the exact design.
We should note that some leaks showed the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max with quad camera setups, while other rumors that the pros will only have triple cameras (and thus the vanilla models will only have two). The difference can be explained by whether or not the sources count LiDAR as a camera. In any case, the device in the video above is presumably an iPhone 12 Pro (or Pro Max).
However, note that there is no FCC label on the back of the device; this is typical of pre-production and test units. IPhone 12 models are currently in that stage. This also means that this is not just a standard iPhone 11 Pro.
There is still the very real possibility that this is a knockoff, there are many out there. We have to wait for a more credible leak from a trusted source until we can either rule this out as fake or confirm that it is the genuine item.
