Former President Pranab Mukherjee’s medical condition has “declined” and he is in “septic shock due to a lung infection,” the Army Research and Referral Hospital said Monday. Mukherjee is being handled by a team of specialists after his health deteriorated yesterday.
The former president was admitted on 10 August to the Delhi Cantonment Hospital, where he underwent surgery for the removal of a clot in the brain. He had also tested positive for COVID-19 at the time of his admission. Later he developed a lung infection and kidney dysfunction. The former president has been in a coma since surgery.
“There is a decrease in the medical condition of the Hon’ble Shri Pranab Mukherjee since yesterday. He is in septic shock due to his lung infection and is being managed by a team of specialists. He continues to be in a deep coma and on respiratory support, ”the hospital statement said.
On Independence Day, Sharmistha, the daughter of Pranab Mukherjee, recalled raising the flag at her ancestral home in Kirnahar, in the Birbhum district of West Bengal, last year. Stating that the 84-year-old Bharat Ratna beneficiary never missed the celebrations, she wrote: “In her childhood, my dad and my uncle raised the National Flag at our ancestral home in the village. Since then, she never lost a year hoisting tricolor on Independence Day. Sharing some memories of last year’s celebration at home. I am sure he will do the same next year. Jai Hind “.
Earlier this month, a A 72-hour ‘yagna’ was performed in Mukherjee’s hometown for his speedy recovery.
Mukherjee was the thirteenth president of India from 2012 to 2017.
