Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted a heartfelt tribute to Pranab Mukherjee on Monday, minutes after the former president’s death was announced, saying that he had been “blessed” to receive support and guidance from Mukherjee when he became prime minister in 2014 and It was “new to Delhi”.

The prime minister said that Mr. Mukherjee had made “lasting contributions (to) key economic and strategic ministries” during his long career and remembered him as a “prominent parliamentarian”.

Pranab Mukherjee, 84, died at the Army Army Research and Reference Hospital in Delhi, where he was admitted on August 10 and underwent brain surgery, after which he developed complications: lung infection and kidney dysfunction.
