On Wednesday, Haryana police used water cannons in Panipat to prevent a demonstration led by the Haryana Youth Congress from heading to Delhi to protest against the Center’s land reform bills.

The President of the Indian Youth Congress, Srinivas BV, also participated in the tractor rally which was stopped by the police at a barricade in the Panipat district. However, when some workers tried to cross the barricade, the police used water cannons to disperse them.

Subsequently, many youth workers were taken into preventive custody, police said. The demonstration, in which, according to youth leaders in Congress, many farmers were also participating, was to proceed from Panipat to Delhi, where they were to address Parliament, to register their protest against the agricultural bills, which they described as anti-flu.

The rally also disrupted normal traffic on the national highway for some time. Early Sunday, Haryana police had used a water cannon to prevent Punjab Youth Congress workers from entering the Ambala district and heading to Delhi as part of their tractor rally against farm laws.

Srinivas BV and the President of the Punjab Congress, Sunil Jakhar, had also participated in this tractor rally. The Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce Bill of 2020 and the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020 were approved by both Houses of Parliament amid protests from parties of the opposition, including Congress. TMC, DMK and the Left, plus some farmer groups.

The 2020 Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill was passed in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
