Chithra was found dead in her hotel room on Wednesday.

Days after Chithra, a video jockey (VJ) and actor was found dead in a hotel room near Chennai, Nazrathpettai police arrested her husband, Hemnath, on Monday. Chithra was found dead, presumably due to suicide, in a hotel room near Poonamallee in the early hours of December 9.

According to a report, Hemnath was arrested for allegedly instigating Chithra’s suicide. Chithra was reportedly staying at the hotel with Hemnath at the time of her death. The couple married a few months ago and had planned a traditional wedding with guests in January 2021. Hemnath was questioned by police for almost six days before making the arrest. Hemnath was later taken into judicial custody.

Chithra was a popular VJ and was known for her role as Mullai on the Tamil soap opera. Pandian Stores, broadcast on the Star Vijay channel. He was 29 years old at the time of his death. The actor checked into his room early Wednesday morning after returning from filming. At around 3:30 a.m., the police control room received a call from the hotel reporting the death. The police rushed to the scene and sent the body for an autopsy and simultaneously began the investigation of the case.

Various actors and celebrities expressed their shock at Chithra’s disappearance and many of them commented that Chithra was a brave woman and it is unlikely that she would have taken a drastic step on her own. While the police concluded that the death was by suicide, Chithra’s family and friends have alleged a crime in her death. The police have been questioning Hemnath, relatives and friends of Chithra in connection with the case.

The Regional Division Officer (RDO) began the investigation of the case on Monday. An RDO investigation is conducted when a woman who has been married for seven years or less dies in a suspicious manner.
