PM Modi will launch property cards today under the SVAMITVA scheme

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the distribution of property cards under the scheme of Village Survey and Mapping with Improvised Technology in Village Areas (SVAMITVA) at 11 a.m. These cards are physical copies of the title deeds to the villagers’ houses and the surrounding areas they own (as opposed to cultivated land).

The SVAMITVA scheme, which was launched by the prime minister in April, allows the rural masses to use property as a financial asset, the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement on Friday.

PM Modi will interact with some of the scheme’s beneficiaries as part of the event where cards will be awarded to around 132,000 owners. Union Minister for Panchayati Raj Narendra Singh Tomar will be present at the program.

According to the PMO, the beneficiaries are from 763 villages, including 346 from Uttar Pradesh, 221 from Haryana, 100 from Maharashtra, 44 from Madhya Pradesh, 50 from Uttarakhand and two from Karnataka.

Recipients in all states except Maharashtra will receive physical copies of the property cards in one day, but since the western state has a system to recover the nominal cost of these cards, it will take a month there, the statement reads of the PMO.

The scheme is being implemented throughout the country gradually. It will cover 662,000 villages from 2020 to 2024 and pave the way for villagers to use the property as a financial asset to take out loans and other financial benefits, the statement added.

Millions of rural landowners will benefit from the first scheme of its kind involving the most modern means of technology, the PMO said.
