Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in a virtual summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) on Monday to discuss ways to jointly combat the spread of the new coronavirus. While the Prime Minister has repeatedly stressed the importance of international collaboration in the fight against the virus, Modi at NAM will still have novel value, as he has avoided attending NAM summits in the past, marking that many have said a significant departure from India’s foreign policy.
Modi became the first full-time Indian prime minister to skip the NAM summit in 2016. He did so again in 2019, in a decision confirming India’s move from non-alignment to what the Indian authorities currently described as multi-alignment.
“However, keep in mind that this is not the usual NAM summit. It is a virtual meeting and will have the participation of a limited number of member states,” said a source.
Modi is expected to describe India’s Covid-19 strategy in a statement at the meeting.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, who is the current president of NAM, will chair the meeting.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus are also expected to address the summit entitled “United against Covid-19”.
A diplomatic source said the summit was expected to underscore the importance of multilateralism in addressing the challenges NAM countries face in dealing with the virus.
Modi is expected to highlight that, in these difficult times, India has remained responsible for meeting our international commitments, as the MEA has repeatedly said. This is most obvious in the way it has handled the worldwide demands for HCQ tablets and other medications.
To date, India has provided 2.8 million HCQ tablets as grant aid to 25 countries. In addition, HCQ and paracetamol shipments are shipped to 87 countries on a commercial basis.
