NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched six megaprojects worth Rs 521 million on Tuesday under the Namami Gange mission in Uttarakhand.
The Prime Minister inaugurated several sewage treatment plants and their improvements today located in Haridwar, Rishikesh, among other regions.
A museum of Ganges, to show the rejuvenation activities of the river and its biodiversity, at Chandi Ghat in Haridwar was also inaugurated today by the Prime Minister.
Governor Baby Rani Maurya, Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat, Union Ministers Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, MoS Ratanlal Kataria, among others also participated in the event.
“In recent decades, great initiatives have been taken to clean up the Ganges River, but those initiatives did not have public participation or vision for the future. As a result, the Ganges water was never cleaned,” Modi said.
“Ganges brings prosperity to almost half of the country’s population. Therefore, continuous flow and clean water in the river are very much needed. We did not limit it to cleaning the Ganges, but we made it the largest river conservation project in the country, “he added.
According to him, the four-point steps first included creating a network of sewage treatment plants that would stop the flow of dirty water into the river. The second was to build wastewater treatment plants taking into account the needs of the next 10 to 15 years.
“In addition, 100 large cities and 5,000 villages located along the Ganges were free from open defecation, and fourthly, the tributaries of the Ganges are also being cleaned in full force,” he said.
The prime minister said that currently under the Namami Gange mission, projects worth 30 billion rupees have been completed or are underway.

The Prime Minister also released the Jal Jeevan Mission logo and guidelines today.
