Chennai:
Congressional leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi while campaigning in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi, accusing him of being “afraid” of China and working for the interests of a privileged few in the country.
“The question is not whether PM is useful or useless. The question is who is it useful for? PM Modi is extremely useful for two people, that is, ‘hum do, smoke do‘, that they are using it to increase their wealth and that they are useless to the poor, “he said, repeating his accusation that Prime Minister Modi and Union Interior Minister Amit Shah helped crony capitalists.
Gandhi, speaking to lawyers at a university in Thoothukudi, also said Prime Minister Modi was afraid of China because of the clash in Ladakh and had allowed the Chinese to “test the idea” in Doklam near Arunachal Pradesh in 2017.
“Essentially, the Chinese occupied certain strategic areas in our country. They first tested the idea in Doklam. They tested the idea to see how India reacted and noticed that India was not reacting. And then they carried out the idea again in Ladakh and also I believe in Arunachal Pradesh, “he said, according to the PTI news agency.
Starting his three-day tour of Tamil Nadu before the April 6 assembly elections, the congressional leader said Prime Minister Modi’s first reaction to the Chinese raids was “that no one has entered India.”
“That indicated to the Chinese that the prime minister of India is afraid of them. That is the message that he told the Chinese, that he is afraid of them and that the Chinese understood. And since then the Chinese have negotiated on that principle, ” he said.
“They know that the Prime Minister of India cannot stand up to them. Remember my words, our land in Depsang, which is the most important land, will never be under this government again. The Prime Minister will not take back that land.” . It will pretend that everything is fixed, but India is going to lose that territory, “Gandhi said.
Sending such a message to the Chinese was “very dangerous for the future because the Chinese are not going to stop with Ladakh,” he claimed.
He said the congressional government “always dealt with the Chinese without hesitation.”
“The Chinese understood very well that India cannot be pressured. Even in 2013 when the Chinese entered India, we took measures that forced them, forced them to compromise … we went and occupied other spaces,” he said.
“Now they have understood that the prime minister does not have the courage … the Chinese know that the prime minister will compromise,” he added.
