Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the former Indian cricket captain and the Chairman of the Indian Cricket Control Board (BCCI), Sourav Ganguly, on Sunday afternoon to ask about his health after coronary angioplasty. submitted on Saturday.

People familiar with the details said Modi told Ganguly that the center would fly the former captain abroad if necessary.

Several political leaders, including Keshav Prasad Maurya, Uttar Pradesh’s Senior Deputy Minister, who is in Bengal to campaign for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), also visited Ganguly at Woodlands Hospital.

Ganguly, 48, was stable and had breakfast and lunch, doctors said. He underwent coronary angioplasty at 3:00 p.m. Saturday in Woodlands, where three blocked arteries were detected.

Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCS) and stent placement in the right coronary artery were performed radially. Subsequently, revasculation will be performed towards the left anterior descending artery and the obtuse marginal artery.

Dr Rupali Basu, MD and CEO of Woodlands, told the media that although bypass surgery is an option in cases where patients have three blocked arteries, doctors are more likely to opt for angioplasty.

Doctors will get one last call on Monday. Ganguly’s family has asked eminent heart surgeon Dr. Devi Shetty to guide the medical team with his opinion.

Authorities said there is a history of heart disease in Ganguly’s family.

Ganguly, recognized as one of the best captains the India team has ever had, was training in his home gym when he felt sick and dizzy around 11 a.m.

Dr. Basu said in a statement Saturday at midnight that Ganguly arrived at the emergency department around 1 p.m. He had chest discomfort and had vomited while exercising.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar, several cabinet ministers rushed to the hospital on Saturday. BJP leaders also asked about Ganguly’s health. Union Interior Minister Amit Shah told BJP state leaders that the Center would make available all necessary facilities for Ganguly’s treatment.

Ganguly is the most prominent public figure whose name has been circulating in Bengal political circles as the likely main ministerial face of the BJP for the crucial assembly elections to be held in a few months. Ganguly, however, brushed off speculation although he never categorically ruled out the possibility of joining politics. Speculation was fueled by the fact that Amit Shah’s son Jay Shah is the secretary of the BCCI.

On Sunday, former minister and senior leader of the CPI (M) Asok Bhattacharya and TMC member Lok Sabha Saugata Roy alleged that Ganguly fell ill due to the pressure that the BJP leaders were putting on him. BJP State President Dilip Ghosh and National Secretary General Kailash Vijayvargiya dismissed the accusations. “This is unfounded. Dada is loved by everyone. Let’s pray for his speedy recovery, ”Ghosh said.

Ganguly has been the president of BCCI since October 2019. His older brother, Snehasish, was also a first-class cricketer and is now a trustee of the Bengal Cricket Association (CAB).
