Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday advocated the use of clay jugs instead of single-use plastic bottles for drinking water to save the environment and urged street vendors to use the digital platform to boost their business. . The prime minister made the remarks while interacting with the beneficiaries of the Aatmanirbhar Nidhi scheme (PM SVANidhi) of Madhya Pradesh PM street vendors via video conference.
The Union government had launched the plan on June 1 to help poor street vendors affected by the Covid-19 pandemic to resume their activities.
Commending Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan for implementing the Svanidhi scheme in just two months, the Prime Minister said: “I would like to congratulate the Madhya Pradesh team and Shivraj ji. Their efforts have ensured the benefit of the Swanidhi scheme for more than 1 lakh of street vendors in Madhya Pradesh in just 2 months ”.
“The blockade induced by Covid-19 affected the businesses of street vendors. The purpose of this ‘Svanidhi Samvaad’ scheme is for those people to be able to start over and start their work again, “added Prime Minister Modi.
Interacting with street vendor Chaganlal and his wife from Sanver in Indore district, Archana Sharma from Gwalior, and vegetable vendor Dalchand in Raisen district, Prime Minister Modi advised them how they could improve their business by asking customers to return the tubing used in making broomsticks to reduce the cost of making a broom.
Chaganlal told the prime minister that he wanted to improve his business. The prime minister advised him to use an earthenware jug instead of a single-use plastic bottle to drink water to save the environment. Modi also asked him about Ujjwala Yojna and how it benefited his family.
Interacting with Gwalior’s Archana Sharma, Modi asked if she would serve him ‘tikki‘(empanadas) that he sells at his joint. Prime Minister Modi also asked her if she was aware of Ayushman Bharat’s plan, to which she said that her husband was receiving treatment through the government’s flagship health program.
Speaking with vegetable supplier Dalchand, Modi praised him for using a QR code-based digital platform to receive payments. He also suggested ways to improve her vegetable business.
According to the PMO, up to 4.5 lakhs of street vendors were registered in Madhya Pradesh, and more than four lakhs of vendors received vendor identification and certification. Applications of 2.45 lakh from eligible beneficiaries of the scheme have been submitted through the portal to banks for the credit facility, of which acceptance has been granted to around 1.4 lakh from street vendors worth Rs 140 crore, it said.
“The state of Madhya Pradesh ranks first in the total number of applications accepted, with 47% of these coming from the state alone,” the statement added.
