Pixel 4 XL prototype with gray paint work surfaces, a color that was never released

One step is missing between Clearly White and Just Black and it’s not Oh So Orange. We are talking about the color options for Google Pixel 4 XL, of course, apparently, there could have been another color, gray.

This was discovered by the Twitter user @ akes29 who saw the unpublished prototype on Alibaba. And sure it’s a prototype, the label on the back makes it clear that this device has not been certified by the FCC and should not be sold, but is intended for internal testing only.

Regardless, this unprecedented color scheme features a dark gray back and a light gray button (the Pixel 4 XL’s metal frame is always painted black). Considering that the smaller Pixel 4 was released in the same colors as the XL, there may also be a gray version of that.

It’s unclear why Google decided not to release this color for the 4 XL, but the Pixel 4a is another opportunity for fans of gray – check out this photo from its retail box and this hands-on video, the back is clearly clearer than the black camera island
