Paytm Mini App Store was launched within the digital payments app, the company announced Monday. Paytm announced this just days after tech entrepreneurs in India came together for a national app store, but this is slightly different. Instead of offering native applications and development tools, Paytm hosts links to Progressive Web Applications (PWAs), which are lightweight applications that can be run in a web browser without installation. As of now, the Mini App Store only has a few apps listed, although Paytm plans to include 300 services in the coming days.
According to the Paytm press release, the Mini App Store has been designed to help small developers and businesses in India configure low-cost, easy-to-build applications using HTML and Javascript. These apps open within a window within the Paytm app itself, and the listings will also be free, Paytm said.
Paytm will also provide developers with free payment avenues including Paytm Wallet, Paytm Payments Bank and UPI. However, it should be noted that an additional charge of two percent applies to payments made with credit cards. For developers, Paytm has also provided a dashboard for analytics, payment collection, and various marketing tools to better engage with users.
The Mini App Store has been in its beta testing phase in the country for some time now and has already been filled with a handful of apps like AQI Monitor, EMI Calculator, MojoPizza, Horoscope, Speedtest, and Unit Converter. Paytm said that more than 300 app-based service providers have already joined the program, including Decathlon, Domino’s Pizza, FreshMenu, Netmeds, NoBroker, Ola and more. These apps are expected to hit the Mini App Store soon.
To access the Mini App Store, open your Paytm app. On the home page, click Show more> Mini App Store from the pop-up menu. The portal allows direct access to users to explore, use and make payments through the applications, without additional downloads or installations.
At the end of last month, Google announced that it would impose its 30 percent fee for applications that are on Google Play but do not use its billing system. This led Indian app developers and entrepreneurs to demand an alternative national app store to Google Play.
In a recent development, Google has delayed enforcing the 30 percent commission on the developer app in India until March 31, 2022. The tech giant says the delay has been implemented so that Indian developers “have time. enough to implement the UPI for the subscription option that will be available on Google Play, for all applications that currently use an alternative payment system. “
Paytm was also one of the key Indian apps to be pulled from Google Play recently. Google later clarified that Paytm was removed from the platform for violating its content rules and not for offering refunds and coupons, as Paytm claimed.
