Chennai:
Tamil film actor Rajinikanth met with senior officials from his political party today and said he will “announce my decision soon” on his electoral policy plans. His announcement came in the context of doctors advising him not to go into politics.
“District officials have expressed their views. They have said that they will agree to any decision I make. I will announce my decision as soon as possible,” the 69-year-old man told reporters today outside his Poes Garden residence in Chennai. He spoke after meeting the district secretaries of the Rajini Makkal Mandram today at the actor’s Raghavendra Kalyana Mandapam in town.
The actor has not set any deadline to make his decision known to the public.
Last month, the actor had hinted that his long-awaited entry into electoral politics could be delayed. A letter attributed to him cited doctors’ concern over the campaign during the pandemic and the potential impact on Rajinikanth’s health. The letter appeared to indicate that the actor had been advised to restrict travel as he has a kidney condition and could be vulnerable to the COVID-19 virus.
The veteran actor later said that the letter “was not mine, but the doctor’s advice is true.”
The suspense about Rajinikanth’s electoral debut comes a few months before the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, which will be held in April-May 2021. It will be the first since the death of the two most powerful politicians in the state: J Jayalalithaa of the AIADMK and MK Karunanidhi, leaving a power vacuum to fill.
