Ahead of the Christmas and New Years celebrations, the Maharashtra government announced a night curfew in all cities and municipal corporate areas. The curfew from 23:00 to 6:00 a.m. is imposed from Tuesday, December 22, 2020 for 15 days until January 5, 2021.
The decision was made to control the spread of the coronavirus disease as people were found to violate social distancing rules. “This is not a normal New Year and that is why we cannot have normal celebrations. The curfew is being imposed to ensure such violations are not repeated, ”said Brihan-Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal.
According to an official statement, it has also been decided to compulsorily put in institutional quarantine for 14 days those arriving at state airports from countries in Europe and Western Asia.
Essential services such as the supply of vegetables and milk will not be affected during the night curfew, but more than five people cannot gather in one place during the seven-hour period.
