Goalkeeper hitter Parthiv Patel revealed that he used the same lines Steve Waugh told him while running into his son, Austin, at the 2019 Sydney Test, in a hilarious role reversal.
Patel, 35, was part of the Indian test team during his historic victory in Australia in 2018-19. While Patel did not play a single Test, he did see Austin Waugh, one of Australia’s four substitute fielders during the match.
In 2003-04, while Senior Waugh was playing his final test in his beloved hometown, Sydney, Patel attempted to sled him. Waugh said to Patel, “Show a little respect, you were in diapers when I played my first test match.”
Around 15 years later, Patel saw an opportunity and approached Austin Waugh to return it in the same coin. “I didn’t run into Steve Waugh, but I ran into his son, during the test match in Sydney in 2018-19. He was one of Australia’s substitute fielders. I went up to him and said, ‘You were in your diapers, When I made my test debut “(laughs),” Patel recalled on the YouTube show called Cow Corner Chronicles.
“I told him to pass my regards to his father (Steve Waugh) and to just say those words to him,” Patel added.
That trip to Australia was historic for the first series of Indian tests that Down Under won. For Patel, it was a way to finally break through the fortress having come close as the Guardian of First Choice on the 2003-04 tour.
“We narrowly missed in 2003-04 in Australia. Being there again as part of the story was brilliant. Winning a series of tests in Australia is huge. Patel was also part of India playing XI in Johannesburg’s test victory on the 2017-18 tour to South Africa in his last international appearance.

To have been a part of history doing test matches like Headingley (2002), or Adelaide (2003-04) or Johannesburg (2017-18) or Australia (2018-19).
