New Delhi:
The indefinite postponement of parliament in light of the coronavirus outbreak is likely to continue through the winter session, as it is “very unwise” to carry out parliament under the current circumstances, top central ministers told NDTV. Delhi is currently witnessing an unprecedented rise in daily coronavirus numbers.
There is no urgency to have a session and the constitutional position is that parliament must meet within six months, a minister said on condition of anonymity. Parliament is expected to convene in the last week of January before the Union budget, which will be presented on February 1.
Parliament had to get up earlier than planned during the delayed monsoon session in September, after many MPs hired Covid.
Seventeen members of the Lok Sabha and eight of the Rajya Sabha tested positive in the mandatory tests that were carried out before the monsoon parliamentary session began. Among the infected Lok Sabha MPs, the BJP had the maximum number: 12. The YSR Congress has two MPs, the Shiv Sena, the DMK and the RLP one each.
During the session, many MPs who initially tested negative contracted the virus, including a central minister who succumbed due to Covid. The situation was getting worse despite strict adherence to safety regulations, including social distancing, separate shifts, and regular RTPCR tests.
This time, crossing party lines, the majority of deputies said it is better to take preventive measures than to put yourself at risk. Although there are some like Manick Tagore, secretary general and parliamentarian of Congress, who says what a parliamentarian should do when the funds have been withdrawn from the MPLAd and now a parliament is not being convened.
Around 200 of the 785 parliamentarians are over 65 years old and are among the population vulnerable to the coronavirus.
Over the past few weeks, Delhi has witnessed a huge increase in coronavirus cases, which the Arvind Kejriwal government has called the third wave.
The daily peak of Covid in the national capital had started to rise to unprecedented levels since the end of October.
As of November 3, the city had registered 6,725 cases after just a few weeks of low numbers. Three days later, he crossed the 7,000 mark. On November 11, the city registered 8,593 new cases, a record high.
