Parliament monsoon session: what to expect today


The Indian parliament will not take any weekend breaks during this monsoon session. And on Saturday, the first weekend they would be working on, the Narendra Modi government will present key reform bills and push forward the legislation introduced in recent months to address the Covid-19 situation.

The Union Labor Ministry will present the Code of Safety, Health and Working Conditions, 2020. The bill aims to consolidate and amend the laws that regulate the safety, health and working conditions of workers in factories and other workplaces.

The Labor Relations Code, 2020 or the amendments to the laws relating to Unions, the employment conditions in the establishment or industrial company, the investigation and resolution of labor disputes and the Social Security Code will also be presented on Saturday in the Lok Sabha.

After the standing labor committee recommended major changes to the original bill, Labor Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar will withdraw the original version of the three bills and introduce the amended bills.

The lower house will also try to pass the tax amendment bill and other laws that relax and modify certain laws, such as income tax laws. The debate took a furious turn on Friday after State Finance Minister Anurag Thakur referred to the failures in creating the prime minister’s national aid fund in 1848, invoking furious protests from congressional leaders.

The Lower House may also pass the Companies (Amendment) Bill 2020, the National University of Forensic Sciences Bill 2020, and the Rashtriya Raksha University Bill 2020 on Saturday.

In Rajya Sabha, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will push for amendments to the Insolvency and Bankruptcy code, while Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan will push forward the 2020 epidemic disease amendment bill.

The Banking Regulation (Amendment) Bill, 2020 can also be approved in the Upper House. Congress and some other opposition parties oppose the bill.
