Parkash Singh Badal, former Punjab chief minister and leader of Akali Dal, returns to Padma Vibhushan to protest “the government’s betrayal of farmers.” The decision comes months after Shiromani Akali Dal resigned from the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) over then-agricultural bills.
According to a party statement released in September, SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal said the decision to resign from the NDA was made due to the Center’s stubborn refusal to provide statutory legislative guarantees to protect the assured marketing of agricultural crops in MSP.
The SAD became the third major ally of the NDA to withdraw from the group after Shiv Sena and the TDP.
Sukhbir Badal had said that the agricultural marketing laws introduced by the BJP-led government are deadly and disastrous for already beleaguered farmers. He said that the SAD was the BJP’s oldest ally, but that the government did not listen to it to honor the sentiments of the farmers.

Several popular faces in Punjab’s entertainment industry have lent support to farmers. Bhim’s army chief Chandrasekhar Azad has also been visiting the upheaval.
