Ban orders restricting the movement of people have been extended in Mumbai until September 30 in light of the increase in coronavirus cases, an official said Thursday. The restrictions under section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure have been in effect from the beginning of the confinement.
They were extended under the Aug. 31 guidelines on easing the Maharashtra government blockade, and no new restrictions have been imposed, the official said.
The news, however, caused panic on social media. Even when officials and Maharashtra Minister Aaditya Thackeray told people there were no new restrictions, the internet responded with memes to ease their pain over the extended restrictions. Some also questioned the logic of expanding Article 144 and at the same time stated that there were no new restrictions.
Following an increase in coronavirus cases in Maharashtra, State Health Minister Rajesh Tope said the increase can be attributed to the way the unlocking of restrictions was implemented.
On Wednesday, the state’s total COVID-19 cases rose to 11,21,221 with 23,365 in a single day and 474 deaths.
Taking to Twitter, Aditya Thackeray reassured citizens and asked them not to panic.
