Five days after Palghar Police Superintendent (SP) Gaurav Singh was suddenly sent on a compulsory license, locals began an online campaign to retrieve him.

The IPS officer was sent on an order from Maharashtra’s interior minister, Anil Deshmukh, in connection with the lynching case in Palghar in which three people were killed.

Sujit Singh, who runs a gym in Palghar, and Karan Chaudhary, a social activist, have launched an online petition. They have called on President Ramnath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Prime Minister Uddhav Thackeray and other leaders to reclaim Singh as SP in Palghar.

So far, the petition on change.org has received more than 350 signatures.

IPS officer Gaurav Singh was sent on immediate leave from May 8. Petitioners say it has helped clean up the district of illegal activities such as sand mining, gutka, and liquor mafias and has put in place a strong process for citizens to join forces with the police whenever they have a problem.

“We have personally pointed out several problems in our district and the” super police “quickly took action, winning the hearts of Palghar residents,” said Asif Dhanani, an attorney among the signatories.

“SP is an asset to us,” added Dr. Hitesh Churi, a Palghar physician. “The officer should be reinstated to the same position and I hope that national leaders will allow him to complete his two-year term.”

Meanwhile, the State Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested 12 more defendants in connection with the case. One of those arrested in a minor.

With these arrests, the total number of defendants has reached 146. A local court sent five of those arrested to police custody until May 16. Seven others have been sent to police custody until May 19.

Ten arrested minors were previously sent to Childrens’ Remand Home in Bhiwandi.
