An investigative officer was dispatched to the scene. “Two families (one from Delhi, the other from Gurugram) together with their son had come to India Gate on Saturday night. They had rented Yulu bikes that they were racing on, named after countries like India, Pakistan, Japan, and Australia. They cheered each other on by shouting these names when some locals heard them shouting, ‘Pakistan zindabad’, ”said Eish Singhal, DCP (New Delhi and PRO).
During questioning at the Tughlaq Road Police Station, the police discovered that the family had “named” the 14-year-old “Pakistan” during the game.
“When the boy was slowing down, others, including his parents, were shouting ‘Pakistan haar gaya… peechhe reh gaya’, and when the boy started speeding up they cheered him with ‘Pakistan Zindabad’,” the officer said.
The two men in the group, one of them the boy’s father, were detained by the police for eight hours, before they were allowed to leave around 9 a.m. Sunday.
The three women and the child were also taken to the police station at night, but were allowed to go home. The women, including the girl’s mother, were again called to the police station between 8 and 9 in the morning and released at noon.
Officials from the Intelligence Office and Special Cell were involved during the questioning, the sources said.
Singhal said: “They were cheering and said Pakistan zindabad in a lighter vein.”
