ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Saturday saw its biggest single-day increase in coronavirus cases with 1,952 new infections, bringing the total number of Covid-19 patients to 18,770, authorities said.
The death toll from the viral infection rose to 432 with 47 deaths recorded in the past 24 hours, the ministry of national health services said.
Up to 4,715 patients have been recovered, he said.
A record number of 1,952 Covid-19 cases were recorded in the past 24 hours, the ministry said.
Officials, however, said the increase in Covid-19 cases is not surprising, as it is due to the increase in coronavirus tests.
Up to 193,859 tests have been performed so far, including 9,164 in the past 24 hours, they said.
A 26-year-old female doctor died of the coronavirus at the Holy Family hospital in Rawalpindi. The hospital’s medical superintendent said the young doctor had complained of mild flu and cough symptoms on April 20, which doctors declared “normal fever.”
When her condition worsened after four days, she was rushed to the hospital. They put her on a respirator but she died on April 30.
Meanwhile, special health assistant Dr. Zafar Mirza told reporters that Pakistan is increasing its testing capacity.
He said that the coronavirus is still under control in the country and that the death rate from the disease is also lower.
“Pakistan’s death rate is even lower than projected figures and, secondly, when we look at the world situation, it is much lower than that. If you take care of yourself, you and your family are guaranteed to stay safe, ”he said.
Of the total of 18,770 cases, Punjab registered the highest number of 6,854, followed by Sindh with 7,102, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa 2,907, Baluchistan 1,136, Islamabad 365, Gilgit-Baltistan 340 and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) with 66, the ministry of Health.
Prime Minister Imran Khan launched the second phase of the cash program on Saturday for those who lost their jobs due to the pandemic.
Khan said he is personally monitoring the distribution of the crown relief fund to ensure transparency.
“So far, Rs 81 billion has been distributed to people … I am personally monitoring this process,” he said, initiating the second phase of the Ehsaas cash scheme.
The first phase launched last month. A fund of Rs 144 billion has been set aside for the scheme.
Urging wealthy citizens to contribute to the fund established for people affected by the coronavirus pandemic, Khan said the government will contribute Rs 4 for every Rs 1 donated.
Prime Minister Khan also wished his Russian counterpart Mikhail Mishustin a speedy recovery and good health after he tested positive for the new coronavirus.
“Wishing Russia’s Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin a speedy recovery and good health. The coronavirus is a common challenge and we join our Russian friends in fighting this challenge,” he tweeted.
Industries Minister Hammad Azhar told the media that as part of the measures initiated for companies facing the heat of the pandemic, the government will pay three-month electricity bills for companies whose consumption is between five and 70 kW per month.
Some of the other measures include lowering the interest rate and “unprecedented tax incentives for the construction sector.”
The government would also bring an interest-free loan scheme for small businesses, Azhar said.
Meanwhile, Special Assistant to Homeland Security Moeed Yusuf said some influencers who came from abroad were escaping mandatory tests and quarantine procedures.
“We want all Pakistanis to return as soon as possible but safely. We cannot get them to return and infect their loved ones, so we cannot grant any exemption to anyone to be tested for coronaviruses,” he said.
Yusuf said the process of repatriation of Pakistanis from abroad is slow because “the country’s quarantine facilities can carry 7,500 to 8,000 people at a time.” Another reason, he said, is that most airports and flights worldwide are not working.
