Pakistan’s telecommunications authority blocked TikTok on Friday, saying the Chinese app failed to comply with government instructions for the “development of an effective mechanism for the proactive moderation of illegal content online,” according to a report from the news channel of Pakistan. Pakistan Geo News.
The app, which has faced problems this year in the United States, India and Australia, received a final warning from the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority to moderate content shared on its platform in early July.
The authority said the ban comes as people from various sectors of society have voiced their complaints about “immoral and indecent content on the video-sharing app.”
In response to the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority’s warning in early July, TikTok told Reuters that they had “removed more than 3.7 million” offending user videos “from Pakistan in the second half of 2019.” At the time, they said that 98% of those videos were removed before they were reported and 89% of those videos were removed “before they had a single view.”
The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority said it had issued a final notice and allowed TikTok to respond to complaints and had blocked the app after it noticed objectionable content was continually being posted on the app.
The statement accessed by ANI said: “Considering the complaints and the nature of the content that is constantly posted on TikTok, the PTA issued a final notice to the app and allowed considerable time to respond and comply with the instructions of the Authority for the development of a mechanism for the proactive moderation of illegal content online “,
The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority in its statement informed TikTok that it could review its decision if TikTok develops a satisfactory mechanism to moderate illegal content.
