United Nations:
India has criticized Pakistan for making “irrelevant and irresponsible” comments at the UN, saying the General Assembly is a forum for serious debate, not frivolous accusations.
India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador TS Tirumurti, said this on Monday while speaking at the UN General Assembly on “the issue of equitable representation and increased membership of the Security Council.”
Pakistan’s ambassador to the UN, Munir Akram, in his speech, made references to the Line of Control when expressing his opposition to UNSC membership from India.
“I do not want to waste this House’s time responding to the irrelevant and irresponsible comments made by the representative of Pakistan, who becomes ‘Pavlovian’ every time India is mentioned,” said the Indian envoy, referring to the system. automatic or predictable reactions in the past.
“This is a forum for serious debate, not frivolous accusations,” Tirumurti said.
Currently, the UNSC is made up of five permanent members and ten non-permanent member countries who are elected for a two-year term by the United Nations General Assembly.
The five permanent members are Russia, the United Kingdom, China, France and the United States and these countries can veto any substantive resolution. There has been a growing demand to increase the number of permanent members to reflect the contemporary global reality.
India, Brazil, South Africa, Germany and Japan are strong contenders for permanent membership on the UN Security Council, which has primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security.
