By unanimous resolution, Pakistan’s National Assembly has called on the government to remove its ambassador to France after French President Emmanuel Macron refused last week to condemn the French publication for showing cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. However, Pakistan does not have any ambassadors currently stationed in Paris, as the last ambassador Moin-ul-Haq left France three months ago after being transferred to China, it reported. News.
Since Moin-ul-Haq’s move to China, Pakistan has yet to appoint an ambassador to France.
The images of the Prophet have drawn ire in the Muslim world with the leader of Turkey calling for a boycott of French products. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has spearheaded the accusation against France, questioning Macron’s state of mind, and France called his ambassador to Turkey for consultations, a first in Franco-Turkish diplomatic relations.
Protests have also been held in Iraq, Turkey, Bangladesh and the Gaza Strip against the cartoon.
An 18-year-old of Chechen origin beheaded a teacher near Paris on October 16 who had shown cartoons of Muhammad in class.
France considers religious satire to be among the types of speech that fall within freedom of expression, while many Muslims regard any perceived attack on their prophet as a serious offense.
