New Delhi:
Pakistan is using drones to drop weapons such as AK-47s through the Line of Control at night, Jammu and Kashmir police said today, revealing that assault rifles and a handgun had been found last night in an Akhnoor village. The evidence points to the role of the Jaish-e-Mohammad terror group, which is involved in major terror attacks, including the Pulwama attack, police said.
Based on specific information that a Pakistani drone dropped weapons from the air into a village in the dead of night, the Jammu and Kashmir police searched the area. Two AK assault rifles, a pistol, three AK magazines and 90 rounds were seized in the village of Zad Sohal, police said.
Two shipments of arms and ammunition have been found in Akhnoor, which is about 12 km from the border. The weapons were intended to be delivered to terrorists in the Kashmir Valley, police said.
“Our initial investigation suggests that Jaish-e-Mohammed is behind this,” said Jammu Senior Officer Shridhar Patil.
There were drone sightings of Pakistani origin near the border in Punjab last year, after which the police alerted the Border Security Force.
Punjab police also reported drones dropping AK-47 rifles, grenades and satellite phones in October last year. Officials believed the weapons were intended for terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir.
