New Delhi:

Delhi police have “ridiculed” the criminal justice system by mentioning the names of CPIM leader Sitaram Yechury, Yogendra Yadav of Swaraj Abhiyan and other academics in a defendant’s disclosure statement, attached to the supplemental charge sheet of the charges. February riots, Congress leader P Chidambaram said on Sunday.

“Did the Delhi police forget that between the information and the charge sheet there are important steps called Investigation and Corroboration?” Chidambaram, a former interior minister for the union, tweeted.

“The Delhi police have ridiculed the criminal justice system by naming Mr. Sitaram Yechury and many other academics and activists on a supplementary charge sheet in the Delhi riots case,” he added.

The other people named in the disclosure statement include economist Jayati Ghosh, Professor Apoorvanand of the University of Delhi, and documentary filmmaker Rahul Roy.

Delhi police clarified on Saturday that they have not been named as defendants.

“It is worth mentioning that the disclosure statement has been truthfully recorded as narrated by the accused. A person is not prosecuted as a defendant solely on the basis of a disclosure statement. However, it is only on the existence of evidence Sufficient corroboration. Legal action is taken. The matter is currently in court, “Delhi police said in a statement on Saturday.

The supplemental charge sheet was submitted two days before the first part of the monsoon session of parliament begins. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has said his party will raise the issue in both houses.

More than 50 people died and hundreds were injured, many with gunshot wounds, in the violence in northeast Delhi in February, after weeks of protests against the CAA and the National Register or Citizens or NRC.

Yechury, a veteran MP, called the police actions “illegitimate, illegal.”

“The Delhi police are under the Ministry of the Interior and the Center. Their illegitimate and illegal actions are a direct result of the policy of the main leaders of the BJP. They are afraid of the legitimate peaceful protests of the main political parties and are making a misuse of state power to attack the opposition. ” Yechury said in a series of tweets yesterday.

Yechury’s party also convicted the police on the charge sheet.

“The CPI (M) condemns this disgusting action by the Delhi police to promote the narrative of their political masters and urges the government to desist from such acts of criminalizing peaceful political protests,” said the Politburo (Marxist) of the Communist Party of India in a statement today.
