The Oxford Union debating society postponed West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s virtual speech late on Wednesday afternoon, citing unforeseen problems.
“The request has been made by phone from the organizers, citing some unforeseen problems, a while ago. The program with Oxford Union today is canceled, ”the state Department of the Interior tweeted a few minutes before the prime minister was supposed to deliver the speech.
Banerjee would have been the first Indian female leader and administrative chief to address the forum, according to the Trinamool Congress.
The Oxford Union was founded as a debating society in the early 1800s. Eminent personalities such as the Dalai Lama, Stephen Hawking, Albert Einstein and Mother Teresa have addressed union debates.

Later, the union sent a letter to Goutam Sanyal, senior secretary to the chief minister.
“I sincerely hope that the Honorable Chief Minister understands this and can honor us with her esteemed presence as soon as possible. With your permission, I will pass on your data to my successor, to whom I give you this Friday, ”wrote Beatrice Barr, president of the OU in her letter to Sanyal.
