More than 6,00,000 UK citizens have received the coronavirus vaccine developed by pharmaceutical companies Pfizer and BioNTech, the Department of Health said.
“Thanks to a great effort from the NHS [National Health Service] To overcome significant logistical challenges, 616,933 people across the UK have received the coronavirus vaccine, “the ministry said Thursday night.
More than 521,000 people were vaccinated in England, more than 56,000 in Scotland, more than 22,000 in Wales and more than 16,000 in Northern Ireland.
“In the coming weeks and months, the vaccination rate will increase as more doses become available and the program continues to expand, with more vaccines delivered directly to nursing homes,” the department added.
Last week, the UK identified a new variant of the coronavirus that is 70 percent more transmissible than other strains of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Following media reports, many countries around the world closed their borders and stopped travel to the UK.
