Over 1,850 Coronavirus Cases Linked to Chennai Wholesale Market

The total number of coronavirus cases in Tamil Nadu increased to 6,535 after 526 new cases were reported in the last 24 hours. To date, Chennai has reported over 3,000 cases, while 1,867 cases are linked to Chennai’s Koyambedu wholesale market, identified as an access point. In Tamil Nadu, 1,824 coronavirus patients were discharged after treatment. The state government has advised people to strictly adhere to government-issued travel and health warnings.

Tamil Nadu Prime Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) and his deputy O Panneerselvam on Saturday inspected the satellite municipality of Thirumazhisai, where the vegetable market will move from Koyambedu amid the coronavirus-induced blockade. The market in Thirumazhisai will be operational from May 11.

The union health ministry will send teams to 10 states, including Tamil Nadu, to help the state government facilitate management of the Covid-19 outbreak

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu government has formed a High-Level Committee, chaired by Dr. C Rangarajan, former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, to assess the immediate and medium-term overall impact of COVID-19 on the state’s economy, including the impact of the blockade imposed to prevent the spread of the deadly virus. The committee will also evaluate “additional costs and implications due to social distancing and other precautionary measures.”

Tamil Nadu has reported 44 deaths so far from coronavirus-related complications, with four deaths reported on Saturday. (With contributions from the agency)
